Head Master

In-charge, High School

Mr. S. Mallikarjuna Rao

MSc, MEd

It is an honor to be the HM (In-charge) ABM High School.  Our High School has a rich history of academic success which dates back 45 years.  We are truly one of the small village high schools left in Gampalagudem Mandal.  Many of our families, faculty, and staff are alumni, which instills a deep sense of belonging to our school.  Our students and community embrace our motto, “From Village to the ends of the earth.”  I have enjoyed working with our school community to continue our tradition of excellence.

Our school-wide points of focus for the 2020-21 school year provide a vision as we continue our pursuit of excellence.  Our three key areas are: academic achievement, professional development and collaboration, and celebration of unity in communities and culture.

Sincerely,

The Story of

the ABM SCHOOLS

at Ammireddigudem

Welcome to the ABM Schools.

It is my pleasure to share the story of our school which predates the independence of India. Few village schools in modern India have such a rich and unique history.

Rev. Frank Kurtz, an American Baptist Missionary was sent by his mission to work among the Telugu people and was posted at Madhira in the early 1930s. On arriving in India he was heartbroken to see the prevailing ignorance among the people and the situation among the untouchable communities was worse. He knew he had to do something. So he approached the then Asif Jahi Nizam, ruler of Hyderabad State for permission to establish a school at Madhira but the permission was denied. This did not discourage him. Since Madhira was literally the southernmost outpost of the Hyderabad State he crossed over into the adjacent State, the Madras Presidency (an administrative subdivision of British India) where he got permission and land to start an elementary school in Ammireddigudem village approximately 15 miles from Madhira.

In 1934 Rev. Kurtz started the American Baptist Mission (ABM) elementary school and classes were held in thatched-roof classrooms. The present High School building was constructed in 1948. Soon after Rev. Kurtz retired to America the school was upgraded to Middle School in 1958, and finally, a recognized full-fledged High School was established in 1975.

The school has had seven Headmasters till now, all male except for Mrs. PV Kusuma Karam who was the fifth Headmaster. She also had the unique privilege of serving as interim headmistress-in-charge five times before she was finally given full charge as Headmistress in 2008 and this lasted five years from 2008 till 2013 with her retirement. Our current Head Master (in-charge) is Mr. S. Malikarjuna Rao.

In the last 45 years, it has been our joy to see 1305 young rural kids graduate from ABM high school (969 young boys and 336 young girls). This year 32 students will sit for the State high school exam. This also shows how few girls are educated in rural India. Our alumni are scattered from Ammireddigudem to many parts of the country and even in foreign countries, and they are in all kinds of professions. Our alumni and retired teachers have always cooperated and pitched in to help whenever there has been a need. Their partnership is sincerely appreciated. We are also grateful for the support and encouragement of our friends and partners.

Currently, due to financial constraints, we have only seven teachers in the High School and two for the Elementary School for a total strength of 150+ students in the two schools. The number is uncertain due to COVID-19. We are working on several reforms to upgrade our school. COVID-19 has slowed down everything so we are working toward a holistic strategy to educate the students under our care.

Sincerely,
