OUR COVID-19 RESPONSE
Beginning of 2020 this verandah and these grounds resounded with children's chatter and the sound of the school bell. Today the classrooms and grounds are empty.

The world is facing an unprecedented danger with COVID-19. The scale, spread, and the longer-term impact, especially for our school kids are worrying. The hardest thing is for us to see our students out of school for nine months and the end is not in sight.

Our kids come from among the very critically affected population, whose stories will not be heard, and whose needs are still unseen: out of school and often hungry because their parents had lost their work in the unorganized sector due to the lockdown, they are in urgent need of care.
COVID’S IMPLICATIONS
ON POOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
-
Anticipated increase in the school dropout rate among high school children.
-
Financial stress on the families is increasing, the risk of child labor and child marriages is on a rise.
-
Learning gaps are higher than ever because of class disruption leading to children dropping out of school.
-
Children staying at home, have no means to reach out to their teachers, creating more detachment trauma for children that few are thinking about.
TEACHERS - OUR FRONTLINE WARRIORS
OUR INTERVENTION
We have changed our teaching model.
ABM SCHOOL HAS BECOME MOBILE.
We are taking the school to the kids' homes!
-
Our teachers are heroically reaching out through home visits to tutor the kids and keep them connected with learning and school.
-
If a neighborhood is declared as a containment zone they move over to a new location.
-
Sending photocopied assignments and where possible using WhatsApp messaging.
